Singing Lessons

Diego and his cousin, Henry

Diego is musically inclined.  He picks up lyrics quickly and carries a tune pretty well.  He received an award at school for outstanding work in music class.  His teacher even told him he should be on Glee.  He is taking piano lessons.   He's on the right track, baby, he was born this way. However, I can claim 100% of his musical exposure, as I am pretty musical and his Papi is not at all.  I share my music with him, I play the piano, I listen to music, I sing all the time, I dance around the house for fun.

Giancarlo is actually the one who signed him up for a singing class.  This week was his first class.

I learned that Diego is not the least bit afraid of singing in front of a group.  I learned that he sings with a vibrato full of gusto.  I learned that he has very strong opinions about what he likes to sing.  At one point, the instructor asked the students to tell everybody what their favorite song is.  For years, Diego has said that his favorite song is, ahem, "Womanizer" by Britney Spears.  As it should be with the son of gay dads.  However, during music class in front of a bunch of other students and their parents, I was mortified when this question was asked because, well let's face it.  "Womanizer" shouldn't be any child's favorite song!

Fortunately, Diego announced that his favorite song was quite far from what I thought he would say.  He announced that his favorite song is "It's a Small World," which he sang for everybody in a loud, confident, operatic way.  I was grinning from ear to ear.  He cracks me up.

And...when the instructor asked who his favorite singer/group is, he announced The Black Eyed Peas.  Okay.  Good choice.

I'm so glad he shares your musical talent! I really wish he had said Womanizer! That would have been the best!

Ha ha ha! I was so hoping he'd say womanizer! But that's a good choice too. I love that he likes music and isn't afraid to be musical in front of others. So cute!

I LOVE that he's taking lessons and loves to sing! Especially in front of people - that is one brave, confident kid you've got! Well done!

Well, except for the Black Eyed Peas thing.

Welcome back, stranger! I've been wondering where you've been.

That Diego is something else. When are you gonna share a video with us of him belting one out?

Womanizer...Black Eyed Peas...sounds like there needs to be a freshening up in the house that Jason built...get some 2012 pop going on.

Womanizer! It's A Small World! Oh, I love kids at this stage...they're straddling a wobbly fence betwixt childhood and almost adolescence. It's a lovely (and confusing) time for them, but so much of their personality starts to morph at this age.

This is so unlike you...lessons...with other children? Kind of sad he didn't say womanizer too. ;)

He looks so big now! I love that you are raising him with so much music. And of course...humor. That goes without saying, though.
