This year I have an interesting group of characters! There are a handful that stand out already; I foresee an abundance of episodes of Teacher Tales this year.
While working on an assignment that involved writing down their birthdays, I had to help a few who did not remember theirs. Most second graders know their birthdays. However, there are always one or two in every group that don't remember.
Mr. Show: Osvaldo, your birthday is May 8. (Writing it down for him to copy.)
Osvaldo: Again!? That's what my birthday was last year!
Mr. Show: Yep! May 8th has been your birthday every year since you were born, and it will be your birthday for the rest of your life.
Rodney: (Overhearing the conversation) WHAT?! You've GOT got to be kidding me!
Mr. Show: (Turns away with a huge grin on his face.)

Wouldn't it be cool, though? To pick your birthday each year?
Oh how I wish Joel had been in your classroom! He could have been a star on the show. He said (says) things like that all the time. When he was 12 (gulp - yes - 12) he met a new friend who had the exact same birthday. Joel was thrilled! "He has the same birthday as me! The same day, month, year...EVERYTHING. And get this!! He's ALSO TWELVE." Joel thought that last detail was almost too much to be believed....mind boggling, in fact :). *disclaimer* the kid has learning disabilities. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I think that is the cutest story ever!!!!!
What?! You just threw that information at him?!! That's the kind of stuff you sit kids down for, prepare them for, make sure they are emotionally ready for the information...but you just hucked that mind grenade right on over the fence.
So.... I'm reading this after 11pm, the rest of the house is asleep because no one loves Monday (poor Monday), and then I reach Osvaldo's response. I couldn't hold it in! I'm sure I heard someone in the next room grumble through a snore.
Have a great year a head!
You decided to totally blow his mind with that? Did you also discuss how Santa and the Tooth Fairy may or may not, in fact, be real? LOL! Seriously though, I love this. The stuff kids come up with is just too precious and funny sometimes.
When I was babysitting the two sets of twin boys last year, one of the younger ones (he was 8 or maybe 7, can't quite remember) said to me "Did you know women didn't have the right to vote until 1920?? That is so wrong." And then he proceeded to begin discussing Susan B. Anthony. Seriously, 8 years old!! I was quite impressed.
LMAO! Gotta love kids. :)
Ha! I think I have his brother i my class...he's very small and quite immature...and I asked if he was 4 or 5...he answered 5 to my surprise...and I asked when his birthday was and he answered, "A long time ago," but when I finally looked it up it was just two days earlier!
I love kids. That's why I love my job so much, so many smiles.
Wanna REALLY blow Osvaldo's mind? Tell him my birthday has been May 8 for the past 43 years!!!! Can you even imagine?!
I always tell them if they don't know when their birthdays are...no one will give them presents. Appropriate?
Keep the tales comin'!
Can't we pick two dates?
I love your teacher tales and am looking forward to many more.
FUNNY!
Wouldn't it be so cool just to get to pick one day every year? My birthday is in January and I always hated that. I HATED my mother bringing cupcakes to my class, etc. I always wanted a summer birthday so that I could shift the attention away from me.
Hahaha- that's cute!
You should have just messed with them and changed all their birthdays, to the Summer! Think about it, no classroom birthday parties! m.
I am laughing ... kids are so cute and so real. Good to hear from you. Love, always, from The Prairie. xoxo.
Priceless! Keep these for your retirement book!
