Easter? I Guess.

I was musing today at how taken aback I am when people ask me what I'm doing for Easter.  I have to stop and blink, and think.  Even as a child growing up in an active Mormon home that fully believed in the Resurrection and the Atonement, we didn't really do much.  We colored Easter eggs and hid them again and again (ourselves; we, the children, even had to hide them the first time) until eventually the majority of them got lost or smashed or left out too long to be eaten.  And we went to church.  But we went to church every Sunday, and we talked about Jesus every Sunday, so Easter didn't feel like anything really different.  I know we didn't get Easter baskets, I don't think we even got any candy.

Once I married, Easter became a bigger deal.  Both Claire and Giancarlo at least do Easter baskets and some token gifts.   Giancarlo's family tends to have a get-together at someone's house.  But again, get-togethers happen all the time anyway.

I suppose many self-proclaimed agnostics feels this way about Easter.  But I do like chocolate.  I do like good food.  I even mildly enjoy coloring eggs.  I love spring weather and the shades of green of the surrounding hills during springtime.

And what's not to love about a cute, fuzzy, tiny little rabbit?

I used to love to color and hide/find the eggs. Now mostly everyone does the plastic kind - booo. Several years ago when my kiddos were little my son pulled out a HUGE box tv off the entertainment center to get an egg and it plopped on the floor with a thunderous thud. Oh, good times. :)

Easter to me if the harbinger of Spring. All of the Christian holidays seem to spring from pagan holidays anyway. As an agnostic I have no problem with that fact. As a little kid we got an Easter basket bull of candy with was fun. Nothing after that. Oh, I used to buy my Mother hyacinths every Easter. A tradition of many years. I won't be doing that this year since Mom died last September. Easter to me is just another Sunday. This year it is the day before my preparation for a colonoscopy. I'll remember this year for sure.

Any holiday that involves giving chocolate is a favorite holiday of mine. enjoy your weekend and may the gods of colon cleansing be gentle with you.

Ah Easter isn't as exciting as Christmas but it was up there with favorite holidays when I was growing up. New outfit, basket full of candy, and ham for dinner. Yep it was a good day back then and even when the sons were little. Now Easter baskets are full of beef jerky and booze. Dinner is spent at the in-laws which I hate. I hate. I.HAATE. I hate it so much, I'm hoping I come down with a 24 hour bug so I don't have to go....

My husband's side of the family is a whole bunch of non-believers, so we have an enormous egg hunt at my house... about 500 eggs for 8 kids. And a ton of eating all day long. Then, the next day we will go to my side of the family... where my mom is as religious as religious gets. We will time it to show up after mass ends, and we will have a very small and boring breakfast.

I like Easter for your reasons--I'm always shocked at what a big deal it is to people. My husband and I celebrate these things in a very secular fashion, so Cadbury creme eggs, Peeps and Deviled Eggs are our big traditions!

Growing up in a Christian Science family, Easter was treated differently than most other families that I've observed treat it. It wasn't until I had my own children, left that church, and found my own faith that Easter began to mean something significant to me. I love the fact that it comes around the same time as Passover. That reminds me that the beliefs of others are just as important to them as mine are to me, and that we are, in fact, all interrelated.

I'm offended that mark said Seasons Greetings. Keep Christ in Easter!! Oh wait. Christ isn't in Easter. Keep East in Easter!! Sorry - I have an occasional lapse in good taste. Jason - I also love the family and tradition of religious holidays....and I also appreciate the message of the holidays even though I might not adhere to the religion. What's not to love about the message of peace at Christmas? Birth and Renewal at Easter? And because we are an agnostic yet culturally/religiously schitzophrenic family - we also do Passover at my dad's....one of my personal favorites for too many reasons to mention, but one of which is the consumption of overly sweet wine :).

Easter... isn't that when he rises? And if he sees his shadow, there are six more weeks of winter?

Huh? There's more to Easter than the bunny, baskets of candy and hidden eggs full of money?
