The opportunity to acquire a local restaurant presented itself to me a little while back, and you may have noticed the brief, yet unplanned hiatus that the cast and crew of The Jason Show has taken. I was not really planning to get into the restaurant business, but a couple of friends of mine who own restaurants have been discussing how much they enjoyed it, in spite of the large amount of work it entails.
So...I made the plunge. It has been a lot of work, but it has also been much simpler that I had imagined, in many ways. Details fill my mind constantly pertaining to which foods to put on the menu, the best layout, how to minimize wasting food, how much money is coming in as opposed to how much is being spent, and, believe it or not, thoughts of expansion already cross my mind on a daily basis.
At times I worry that this new venture will spread me way too thin--after all, how does one own a restaurant and hold down a full time teaching job, not to mention dedicating time to my family and friends. Giancarlo has been so patient, never complaining about how much time it is taking away from the family, or how much my mind has been preoccupied. Diego has taken a keen interest in the restaurant business; something I may not have expected from him. He is always curious about the food, the customers, the whole process, really. He loves to watch me at work and he desperately wants to help out. I allow him to do small jobs, but to his dismay, the bigger stuff has to be done by someone else.
This may sound strange, but I really haven't told many people about the restaurant. Only those who are with me every day know about it. My siblings have no idea; this will come as a surprise to them, and not even Hilary and Amelia know about it!
What kind of a restaurant is it, you ask? I'd say it is an eclectic mix. Some of our specialties include French toast, waffles, omelettes, a killer fruit salad, (breakfast) clam chowder, macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, and burritos (lunch) and for dinner, my favorites are lobster, seafood paella, beef stew, and a tomato bisque. As time goes on, I'll be branching out. But for now, these main items seem to keep my customers coming back again and again.
I wonder how long I'll stick with it. Will I grow tired of it quickly, as I have some other things that I've tried? Or will it be something that sustains me over time, like writing and producing The Jason Show. Time will tell!
I'll keep you posted, and hopefully, production of the Show won't be compromised too much!

Great luck, Jason! How exciting. :)
For real?? That's crazy and exciting all at once!
So, is it open right now??
You are nothing short of amazing! I have trouble keeping up with my job and my own little kitchen.
Best wishes and bon appetite to your future diners!
That's great! It sounds like a great place, the menu is the kind of food I love to eat. Good luck with it!
Congratulations! It's great to listen to your heart & follow your dreams.
Oh can I come and work there under the table for a month or two some day?
Well, not really under the table, more like behind the prep counter or the stove.
Oh my hell!!! HOW did you keep this a secret!?!? I'm actually a wee bit jealous. If I didn't know how much work it was, I'd have a restaurant in a heartbeat! The bar is pretty close, and for now it's good enough. I can't wait to hear all about your adventures.
What? What? What!!! This is almost as surprising as that one time you told me you were gay! I'm calling you RIGHT now!
Awesome! Sounds like a great place, too! Congratulations, Jason!
I love humanity, but I hate people.
So I could not do a restaurant... I'd tell people to kiss my ass and end up with no customers.
Good luck to you!!!
Wow! That is is some undertaking. Good luck with it!
Okay, next time I'm in town, I'll email you and I will be there! Can't wait. I love clam chowder.
heh, heh, heh

Ack. You've now given me a whole list of things I want but can't get.I have to admit that I was waiting for the punch line. Congratulations.
Wow, a surprise indeed. Best of luck with it! I bet it's fantastic!

Your Friend, m.
Oh my gosh! That's so exciting! I want to come be a customer there. Can't wait for more details and pictures!
You never cease to amaze me with your talent!
This is wonderful news Jason.
I wish you the best of luck....may you enjoy this venture and make millions too!!!
how exciting! The menu sounds right up my alley. Let us know how it goes!
By the look of the menu, Jason, we are there already!!! Good luck with this and knowing your passion for doing things you love, I can see this being a great success!
Congratulations! So what did you name your new baby??
What the what?
Wow! Really? My hat is off to you sir!
Are you messing with us? I was so waiting for the punchline.
What are you talking about?
I think this is a trick : ) You have opened a restaurant in your home! For your family. You started cooking more? Am I right? : )
I would call you if I knew your number!
Congratulations to you friend!
Oh Em Gee!
Also, my word verification is "bedom" which you and I both know means bedroom. WHAT?
I've always heard the restaurant business is fun, but incredibly time consuming. The folks I know who are successful are married to their work. Maybe you can work around that if you have good help.
Best of luck. Wish I could eat at your restaurant!
Jason - stick with it at least long enough for us to come and check it out on our yearly summer pilgrimage to LA! For sure!
Jason! That is so exciting. I see it easily. The best of luck and good fortune to you!
You must have very good help at the restaurant that are reliable enough that you can keep the teaching job.
You sound excited and sounds like Diego is too about this new venture. Best of luck with it and let us know how things are going once in awhile.
OH Jason, this is so exciting. What is the name of your restaurant? Such a creative soul you are; both of your occupations take thinking outside the box. (Well, as much as a school district will allow. :) )
Good Luck!! I've been thinking about you lately. :)
