Their Names Next to My Heart

I will carry their names next to my heart when I walk.

I've spent the last few months conditioning myself to be able to walk long distances.

I've spent the last few months raising money ($2695.00!) to contribute to breast cancer research.

I've spent the last few months feeling incredibly grateful to all of the people (65!) who have generously sponsored me.

I've spent the last few months getting to know my team, Team Safe at Second.  I've enjoyed spending time with Susan, Jacque, Melissa, Christine, Mary Jo, and Tasha as we have walked on early Sunday mornings throughout our fine city.  They are an extraordinary group!  In a very, very good way.

I've spent the last few months spending more time with my long-time friend, Sue, who invited me to join the experience.

I've spent the last few months thinking more than ever about the horror that is breast cancer.

I've spent the last few months thinking about breast cancer survivors, and how in awe I am of them.

I've spent the last few months thinking about my mom, hoping that our team's effort will get us just that much closer to finding a cure.

As I walk, it would be my honor to carry the names of breast cancer victims, both the survivors and the ones who did not make it.  So, please.  Think about your life, and think about the people who you care about who have fallen victim to this relentless disease.  And leave me their names in a comment, or email me directly if you prefer.

I will carry their names next to my heart as I walk.

We will be walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day For a Cure in San Diego on November 19-21.

I would love it if you would carry the name of my 7th and 10th grade English teacher (I was lucky enough to have her twice and then know her again as an adult) Tina Graham-Caso with you.

It was quite a loss to her family and all who knew her that she did not survive.

Jason, I am so impressed and proud of what you are doing. You have such a huge, empathetic, loving heart.
If you have space, would you be kind enough to carry our pediatrician, Diane Fuquay M.D.'s name with you? She died a year before Katie was diagnosed. She was a great inspiration and caregiver to our entire community on Bainbridge Island. Thank you so much for doing this!

A fantastic, capable 29 yr old lady recently died of breast cancer. She was diagnosed in college. My kids went to school with her. Heartbreak all around. Her name was Kelln and we miss her. Have a fantastic walk!

i thought maybe i wouldn't be able to read this post because my dear friend Susan passed away a little over a year ago-4 short years after being diagnosed with breast cancer. but i'd love for you to carry her name in your heart.

(i haven't been able to read a lot of the posts i've seen about breast cancer-i'm a big baby).

Jason, thank you so much for this opportunity and a chance for us to remember and reflect on the life of our dear friend Janet Ferguson who passed on almost 10 years ago. She would be very amused by the attention!

I love how dedicated you are to this cause.

Just so you know, I am growing a mustache. This month I'll be growing a mustache as a way of raising awareness that 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Any time someone asks about my awesome stache, I'll tell them that stat and ask for their support. You can help out by donating to the cause. Donations go to Live...strong and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Love your caring for others, Jason. You have a huge heart.

I have the names of five survivors, friends of mine who fought the fight and (so far) have survived:

Kimberly and Kathleen, twin sisters who both developed breast cancer, fought it and survived.

Vicki, my hairdresser, who has survived ovarian cancer and breast cancer. And her daughter Charleen, who also fought breast and ovarian cancer.

and my friend Paula, also a survivor who caught hers very early.

Thank you just doesn't seem adequate...but thank you. Hugs!

Jason, please remember Jo, a victim and Amy a survivor!

Tracy took my "Amy"! :)

But yes, Amy is a survivor (our team name Amy's Angels!) and so is my high school friend Karen.

And there is also a fellow 3-day walker, Becky, who is Stage 4 terminal cancer fighter who probably won't make it to the next 3-day...but that is why we walk!

We walk for so many reasons and it's because of this walk that SGK raises MILLIONS for research & education.

You're in for one hell of a great experience, my friend! :)
