Well, who wudda thunk that I would have gotten so many suggestions for my young, hip, cool, grandpa name? Here they are, in no particular order:
GDaddy
Pappa Boy
Grandpapa
Paw Paw
Pee Paw
Peeps
Peep
Grandvater
Marshmellow
G
Papa J
Old Man
Pwap
G-thang
Pappy
Gramp-J
Poppy
"PAPI CHULO"
"PAPI J"
"Buelo"
"Buelito"
"GP"
Booma
Big Daddy
Dooba
Drampo
Grando
Grambo
Ye Ye
Tu Tu
Popsie
Poppers
Pompa
Pompus
Opa
Oggy
Ogar
Nanu Nanu
Wang Chung
Su Su Sudio
G-Thong
G-String
Now, I know that some of these suggestions were meant to be funny. And of course, they are. Some of them are hysterical, some are just silly---I love them all. My favorite one of the sillies?
G-Thang
Thanks, Laura, for that one. It has cracked me up for days every time I've thought about it!
And of course, there's always this one that makes me giggle because Daniel and Paul called our dad this for a while, although at the time I thought it was really disrespectful:
Pwap
(pronounced Pwap, like Trap, spoken at the back of your throat, with the same intonation as a duck quacking). I drew the line when Hilary thought it was funny, too, and started calling ME Pwap.
Then there were the suggestions that won't work, because they are already taken, in one way or another, in our family:
Poppy and Papi
(Diego calls Giancarlo this, both pronounced the same)
Papa
(Diego calls Pietro "Papa Pietro")
GP
(This is Giampiero's nickname)
And yes, no offense to those who suggested these. I simply can't see myself being referred to as
Peep
Pee Paw
Paw Paw
Peeps
Marshmellow
Grandvater
G-string
G-thong
Wang Chung
Nanu Nanu
Oggy
Pompus
Pompa
Ogar
Old Man
Booma
Dooga
Ye Ye
Tu Tu
Drampo
or
Su Su Sudio
So what does that leave? The surviving contestants are on the right side of your screen.
Okay, America! It's up to you! Vote now!
Thanks to all who submitted your suggestions, and especially thank you to Kira, who posted a whopping
20
suggestions. (Although most of there were absurd!)

That was the longest post in history, JDaddy!
I meant Papa J.
absurd huh? Just so you know, Phil Collins hit "Sussudio" and the record it was on "No Jacket Required" were chart topper, number ones in the mid-eighties; Wang Chung, also monumental in the mid-eighties, is a alteration from the Chinese word perfect pitch; and Nanu Nanu from Mork and Mindy (one of the top rated shows in its day) was a huge catch phrase in the late seventies.
Why you don't want to be named among the likes of these greats is completely beyond me.
I was just rereading this list.. Grandvater. That cracked me up. Those names are pretty good.
I never saw this before. Pee Paw made me laugh. Whatever did you decide to go with? I am glad Giancarlo gets to be Poppy. I always thought that was the sweetest name : ).
